Formed under various natural conditions, soils are different from each other with respect to characteristics and fertility from region to region. That is why from ancient times it has existed and evoluated the preocupation for the appreciation, choosing and using the best lands for agriculture.
Dolj County belongs to the temperate climatic area, but its position and the depression character of the field which it occupies in the neighbourhood of the bend of the Carpatho-balcanic mountainous chain, determines, on the whole, a warmer climate than in the central and northern part of the country with an annual average of 10-11.5°C.
The relief is dominated by the Romanian Plain, but there are also hilly areas in the North. The altitude increases from 30 to 350 m from the sea level, from the Southern to the Northern part of the County, forming a large amphitheatre that opens to the sun.
The research were carried to determined the type of soils from researched area, the main physico-chemical properties, identifying the main limiting factors for the agricultural production and distribution of soils by quality classes.
The main soil types were identified in the studied area: Haplic Luvisols and Vertisols. Land suitability for agricultural uses is expressed by land distribution by quality classes. From this point of view, the agricultural land from studied area are in the III quality class, with middle suitability.
The main restrictions of soil quality: soil compaction, low permeability, temporary moisture excess etc.
