ABSTRACT
The present paper aims to present the possibilities for creating a geographical information system in order to facilitate monitoring of the territory, by real-time analysis and providing local administrative information of interest, as well as for efficiently monitoring the achievement of the objectives of sustainable development in Zlatna locality. Zlatna area has a natural and antrophic capital insufficiently appreciated, promoted and exploited due to the lack of a uniform and efficient approach of all existing problems in the area. Until 1990[2], Zlatna was one of the pillars of the mineral-extracting[3], processing and chemical industries in Romania. The unprofitability of the exploitation and the inability of its inclusion in the pollution parameters admitted have put an end to the once flourishing industry. At present, Zlatna is an area which requires some measures to be taken for sustainable development on all three dimensions, also being confronted with numerous problems of economic, social and environmental nature.
