THE COMPARISON OF AGGREGATE MICROTEXTURE EVALUATION APPROACH BASED ON THREE DIMENSIONAL IMAGE ANALYSIS AND PROFILE BASED EVALUATION

ABSTRACT

Microtexture is an important surface characteristic from the pavement skid resistance point of view. Its main role is to secure the basic friction level between tire and road surface by the contribution of the irregularities on the individual aggregate surface. Therefore the methods for its accurate evaluation are necessary. Two different methods for aggregate microtexture quantification and subsequent evaluation are presented in this paper. The first presented microscope method uses three dimensional image analysis to aggregate microtexture evaluation by the volumetric parameter. This parameter was determined as a volumetric difference between two planes (wrapping plane and aggregate surface). The second presented profilometry method uses the commonly used statistical texture parameters to aggregate microtexture evaluation. The measurements were carried out on two aggregate fractions of aggregate samples with different microtexture. The values of the determined volumetric parameter were compared with the values of statistical texture parameters. At the end the applicability of presented methods and investigated microtexture parameters is discussed.
