STUDY OF THE SETTLEMENT FOR SHALLOW FOUNDATIONS ON UNSATURATED PLASTIC CLAY FILLS AND LOESSIAL SOILS

ABSTRACT

The experience accumulated in Romania and worldwide by means of studies, design and control of the behaviour of many shallow foundations has rendered evident the existence of some soils, such as the loessial soils and the plastic clay fills, which are characterized by a high deformability, due to their sensitivity at wetting. One of the defining feature of these soils is their “contractancy” under the simultaneous action of compression and shear stresses.
The macroporous soils, such as the loessial soils, have a contracting macrostructure. Peculiarities of shallow foundations’ settlement on loessial soils are examined.
The contracting behaviour of such soils under triaxial stress conditions is considered and experimental results for drained tests are given, proving the major influence of the deviator stress on the bulk modulus value. Model load-settlement tests performed with rigid plates on macroaggregated loose soils are investigated by the X-ray computed tomography technique, enabling to visualise the progressive development of the settlement’s active zone.
