Disposal of increasing waste production in mining is currently a serious problem of civilization. The most common way to dispose of mining waste is storing them on impoundments. The hydraulic transport is advantageous from the standpoint of service and perhaps economy too, but the geotechnical properties of the resulting sediment are poor especially when saturated. For the design and construction of safe dumps with minimum impact on the environment the knowledge of the geotechnical properties of sedimented mining waste plays a decisive role. The paper presents results of investigations into the physical and mechanical properties of mining waste sediment bedded on impoundment. The experimental measurements were verified by the following geotechnical properties of mining waste : grain size distribution, density, dry density, specific gravity, water content, porosity, shearing strength compressibility and permeability. The laboratory experiments were performed on mining waste sediment containing various amounts of grain diameter ɸ < 0,063 mm. The paper presents the variation in the physical and mechanical properties of mining waste to change the content of grain diameter ɸ < 0,063 mm.
