ABSTRACT
Romanov sheep are seen as most fertile breed, but pure breed lamb growers are not satisfied with fast growth and carcass quality processing enterprises. To tackle this problem there are researched different crossing variants. In Latvia are previous studies of Dorper breed rams use in crossings.
The aim of our study was: to determine efficiency of using Dorper breed rams for crossbreeding with the ewes of Romanov breed. Analyzed lambs were born on the farm and bought 2.5-3.5 months of age in Latvian Association of Sheep Breeders breeding ram fattening/ breeding control station "Klimpas." During the study lambs had provided the same keeping and feeding conditions, they had unlimited access to fodder and hay, and were provided with additional salt and mineral. Water was provided from the automatic water bowls. During the study were controlled live weight, and fodder consumption. After the slaughter of the lamb carcass quality assessed by SEUROP classification.
Romanov and Dorper crossbred lambs should grow faster than purebred Romanov lambs. Lambs were fattened for 69.5 days, reaching an average growth of live weight gain per day - 291.9 g. Lambs were slaughtered 160.8 days of age with an average live weight of 46.4 kg.
Smallest carcass dressing (46.6%) was obtained from crossbred lambs, they also had shortest carcass (70.8 cm) and smallest meat-and-bone ratio - 2.64.
Lambs 1 kg of live weight increase production consumed 6.4 kg of fodder.
