ORAL HYGIENE PRODUCTS BASED ON MEDICINAL PLANT EXTRACTS WITH ANTIOXIDANT ACTIVITY

ABSTRACT
Antioxidants are compounds with the ability to inhibit oxidative processes generated by reactive oxygen species in the body, helping it to not destroy cells. The dry flavoring plants usually used as condiments in food, are rich in phytochemicals, full of nutrients, minerals, multivitamins and antioxidants, which bring important benefits to our health and help fighting against free radicals which accelerate the aging process. With rich content in polyphenols, carotenoids, vitamins, minerals and many other bioactive compounds, herbal extracts from sage (Salvia officinalis L.), tarragon (Artemisia dracunculus L.) and fennel (Foeniculum vulgare Mill.) may be useful as a hygienic mouth treatment and especially in preventing many inflammatory diseases which arise from action of oxidative stress at oral cavity level.
The aim of this paper was to obtain selected seasoning herbal fluids extracts with an increased antioxidant activity. The dried vegetable products were analyzed by AAS for trace elements and heavy metals content. The hydroalcoholic extracts were obtained using cold maceration method in ethyl alcohol 50% and 70% concentration of dry grinded plants. The obtained hydro-alcoholic extracts were mixed in different molar ratio and analyzed for their antioxidative activity by photochemiluminescence method, antioxidant capacity of lipid soluble substances (ACL) procedure, with Photochem apparatus, Analytik Jena AG, Germany, using Trolox, as standard substance. Some of selected mixed fluid plant extracts with increased antioxidant activity were used for oral usage pharmaceutical forms obtaining.
The new obtained mouthwashes were analyzed for their total antioxidative capacity compared with the one of the herbal extracts. The results emphasize that new obtained mouthwashes present an increased antioxidant activity towards the raw fluid extracts and could be used in oxidative stress associated to different inflammatory disorders of the oral cavity.
