ANTIMICROBIAL AND ANTIOXIDANT ACTIVITIES OF SOME MOUTHWASHES BASED ON BLACK AND RED FLUID FRUITS EXTRACTS

ABSTRACT
With a rich content in polyphenols, carotenoids, vitamins, minerals and many other bioactive compounds, fluid fruits extracts from Morus nigra L., black mulberry, Cerasus avium (L.) Moench. syn. Prunus avium (L.), bitter cherry and Cornus mas L., cornelian cherry, bring important benefits to our health in preventing many diseases which arise from oxidative stress action. The aim of this paper was to obtain selected mouthwashes with an increased antimicrobial and antioxidant activities based on some fluid extracts mixtures from Morus nigra L., Cerasus avium (syn. Prunus avium) Moench. and Cornus mas L., indigenous Romanian fruits. The hydroalcoholic extracts were obtained using fresh fruits by cold maceration method in ethyl alcohol 70% concentration. The obtained fluid extracts were mixed in different molar ratio and analyzed for their antimicrobial activity by antibiogram method and total antioxidative capacity by photochemiluminescence method (ACL procedure, Analytik Jena AG, Germany). The selected mixed fluid extracts with highest antioxidant activity were used for mouthwashes obtaining. The new phyto-pharmaceuticals formulations were analyzed regarding their physical-chemical properties (appearance, pH and relative density), total antioxidative capacity and antimicrobial activity on Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans strains. Preliminary results emphasize that new mouthwashes with the increased antioxidant activity, as gargles, could represent a possible new stimulating regeneration preparations against oxidative stress associated to different tooth aches and mouth diseases.
