ABSTRACT

Fractures are present in reservoirs of hydrocarbons, as well as geothermal ones. They are fundamental for enhancing the permeability of rocks. Evaluation of rock core samples by high-resolution computed microtomography (μCT) and the use of well logging based on microresistivity geophysical probe tests (i.e. XRMI or FMI) make it possible to calculate fractures ratios in two scales: micro (size of micrometers) and macro (size of centimeters). This study concerns the use of these two methods, focusing on analysis of microresistivity borehole images and X-ray images of rock samples from hydrocarbon deposits in northern Poland. The common stage for μCT and XRMI is digital image processing. The results obtained, i.e. resistivity images of fractures in the borehole wall and internal structures of samples are used to calculate the share of fractures in the reservoir rocks. Furthermore, μCT testing enables characterization of the fractures connectivity based on 3-D numerical models. The key stage in the presented methodology is the comparison of the fractures ratio for the purpose of analyzing trends in size changes. Through its ability to distinguish fractures, this methodology can enhance the localization of sweet spots and determination of rock permeability.
