ABSTRACT

Analysis of deforestation has grown globally due to the negative impact on biodiversity, climate change, intensification of geomorphologic processes, increase duration and length of the flood wave and influence of local economies.
The purpose of this article is to highlight a complex method of fractal analysis on forest afforested / regenerated / deforested areas in order to establish differences of organizing forest space in the Suceava County.
Using The Global Forest Change 2000-2014 data we extracted digital images in tiff format with forest areas. These were segmented, binarized and analyzed using fractal algorithms: Box-counting, Pyramid dimension, Minkowski dimension, Tug-of-War dimension applied on mass concentration and tortuosity of forestry areas. Because the analyzed images do not respect Euclidean geometry and are anisotropic, each selected and analyzed algorithm is an additional analysis tool that provides extra information that completes the classical morphometric results.
In the analysis it was observed that the deforested areas are increasingly compact and with fractal dimension of mass concentration larger compared to regenerated areas distributed more chaotic with fractal dimension of mass concentration smaller failing to cover partially the deforested areas.
Hence, the fractal analysis is useful in the management of territorial strategies through environmental and economic decisions because it analyzes the characteristics of forest areas with complex influence on the environment.
