ABSTRACT

Invasions of plants have a negative impact on the natural environment, i.a. through the transformation of natural habitats and the displacement of native species. They threaten forest, agricultural as well as protected biocenoses.
This paper assesses the resources and the development dynamics of invasive plant species on the part of the liquidated “Paryż” coal mine in Dąbrowa Górnicza (Silesian Province - Poland) using unmanned aircraft systems (UAS).
Based on the photographs taken by unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), an orthophotomap was generated, on which two distinctive groups of invasive species were identified and planimetrized - a community of Canadian goldenrod Solidago canadensis and a community of Japanese knotweed - Polygonetum cuspidati (Moor 1958). The research was conducted in mid August 2015 during intense blooming of Canadian goldenrod. The study was repeated in late August 2016 due to the shift of goldenrod optimal blooming phase and simultaneous blooming period of knotweed. The obtained results of planimetrizing of surfaces covered with the communities are presented in a tabular form, and their annual growth was determined.
The method of estimating the area occupied by invasive communities, presented in the paper, can be used to plan and undertake activities related to their elimination or reduction of their impact on the areas of aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, including the forest and protected ones.
