EDGE INFLUENCE ON STAND STRUCTURAL CHARACTERISTICS IN UNMANAGED BLACK ALDER SWAMP WOODS IN SOUTHERN LATVIA

ABSTRACT

Swamp woods in Europe have experienced major changes through rapid decrease during last centuries. In Latvia, many black alder swamp woods have been affected by forest drainage activities during the last century. Black alder swamp woods represents an important habitat type and it is protected under Habitat Directive (Council Directive 92/43/EEC). The main objective was to analyze edge influence on stand structural characteristics in study plots adjacent to young, middle-aged and mature stands. In total 30 study sites were established and surveyed. In the south or south–west side of study sites adjacent stands corresponded to three different age groups: young forest stands, middle–aged forest stands and mature forest stands (10 study sites in each group). Tree species and diameter at breast height (DBH) were recorded for each living tree (DBH ≥ 6 cm) and dead (DBH ≥10 cm) tree or dead wood pieces on the each study site. The volumes of living trees and all dead wood were calculated for each tree species in the each forest stand. Our results suggest that stand structural characteristics in black alder swamps adjacent to young and middle-aged forest stands are strongly affected by edge influence, but it softens increasingly with the time after disturbance. The influence of edge has to be taken into account while planning the size and potential buffer zones of habitat protections.
