ABSTRACT

BUGA exhibitions (Bundesgartenschau – Federal Garden Show) lead the way in the creation of new landscape architecture. They play an important role in indicating the different possibilities of shaping spaces connected with water. They present water technologies and equipment, water spaces and spaces that are meant to resemble water. They combine the newest technologies and materials with the ideas that were not possible to implement before. Therefore, they introduce new ways in combining the unique atmosphere of water, its functional aspects and technology.
The paper aims to show how, using water and technology, landscape architects can create landscapes in which water or its illusion plays the main part in BUGA Schwerin. The analysis of the different aspects of the exhibition allowed the author to distinguish the elements that make this exhibition different from the previous ones.
Firstly, the location – the whole exhibition is situated near the lake – Lake Schwerin. This determines the unique atmosphere of the exhibition, weather conditions and the fact that it is strictly connected with the historical site – the romantic Schwerin Castle.
Secondly, there is the 21st Century Garden that shows the new possibilities of usage of new building technologies for the creation of water illusions.
Thirdly, the theme of gardens and flower cascade uses water forms to create different landscape architectural elements. For instance, instead of using natural water, designers used blue elements in order to imitate water from the distance.
Water is the core element in this exhibition and the way it is used there – its different forms and materials – shows new interesting trends in the landscape architecture.

Keywords: architectural and landscape design, landscape architecture, water, water space.
