The research aim is to identify minimum forest areas necessary for birch (Betula pendula) stands to provide the sustainable development of farms in forestry in Latvia. The situation in private forests was analysed, and the income level of forest owners (who are at the same time employees as well) was employed as the key indicator, which depends on the dominant tree species and forest type with suitable conditions for growth. Birch is the second dominant species of trees in Latvia behind pine (Pinus sylvestris), as birch stands occupy 895 thou. ha or 29% of the total forest area. Sixty one percent of the total area covered by birch trees belongs to private owners; therefore, it is important to assess an opportunity to earn at least minimum income from economically managing birch stands, which is determined by forest type and the forestland moisture regime. The calculations were based on the minimum income level at EUR 10 619 per year per employee, which is equivalent to the average wage in Latvia in 2013 with employer mandatory social insurance contributions added. The research has found that growing birch trees in the forest type Oxatidosa is the most efficient way, as 93 ha under private management and 83 ha under the management of a cooperative are necessary to earn at least one minimum income.
