ABSTRACT

At present, conventional peripheral computer devices use the latest hi-tech technologies of their industry in order to facilitate PC operation.

However, there are many people with severe disablement, who are not able to
control their PC in a standard way with the help of a keyboard and a mouse. For
the sake of these people it is necessary to find a new solution for PC controlling.
One of the possible options would be an analysis of an eye movement, because
this human organ is left intact even if the rest of the body is severely disabled.

This project is focusing on the possible realization of a complex program, which
will be able to scan a human eye with a video camera and, therefore, to analyze its
movements and status. The program analyzes the eye movements by the
thresholding method and then searches for the polygons, evaluates their
proportions and a deflection of the central axis from the centre of the basic plane.
On the bases of the collected data and after calibration of the whole system, the
program is able to evaluate either the speed of the eye movement or if the eye is
opened or closed. These factors, therefore, allow the user to operate the computer
mouse and the keyboard only by the eye movements. The program was named
EyeControl.

Keywords: eye state determination, thresholding, real-time polygon detection, Java
