THE NEW 3D VELOCITY MODEL OF KHIBINY AND LOVOZERO MOUNTAIN MASSIFS FOR ACCURATE LOCATION ROCK BURSTS AND EXPLOSIONS IN UNDERGROUND MINES AND QUARRIES

ABSTRACT
The Khibiny and Lovozero mountain massifs are large alkaline intrusions situated in the centre of the Kola Peninsula, North-Western Russia. Intensive mining works here are accompanied by large explosions and cause rock bursts and technogenic earthquakes. Monitoring of geodynamic activity of the massifs is carried out by joint seismic network of Kola Branch of Geophysical Survey of RAS and ‘Apatit’ joint-stock company. Accuracy of seismic event location here is very high in mining areas surrounded by a dense seismic network. But the location uncertainty is much greater and amounts to several kilometers for those parts of the massifs that are more distant from the stations. Main reason of such great uncertainty is very complicated seismic velocity structure of the massifs and surrounding areas. A 3D velocity model of local seismic medium is required to improve the location. A registration of several industrial explosions by a network including permanent and temporary seismic stations has been carried out to clarify the velocity structure. As a result, a set of apparent velocities of P-waves along paths crossing the massifs has been obtained. But the amount of data is insufficient for seismic tomography and required manual fitting based on extra geological information. Special software was developed for the modeling and fitting. The Seismic Configurator (SC) program enables to create velocity models of 3D media, locate events and compute apparent velocities of seismic waves propagating along different paths. 2D and 3D velocity models that match the observations were fitted by the data using the program.
