ABSTRACT

Two wetland ecosystems of the Albanian Adriatic coast have been studied over the period 2010-2011, namely Velipoja-Viluni and Kune-Vain ecosystems. Velipoja-Viluni ecosystem is located at the Buna river delta and the studied component is the Viluni lagoon. The Kune-Vain ecosystem is located at the Drini river delta and the components studied are both the Kune and Vain lagoons.
The Viluni wetland has a surface of 300 hectares and an average depth of 1 m. The Kune lagoon has a surface of 300 ha, average depth 0.75 m and maximum depth of 1.3 m.The Vain lagoon has a total surface of 850 ha and an average depth of 0.7 m. Allthree lagoons communicate with the surface waters through one or more channels.
Water quality and trophic state assessment is based on periodical monthly sampling visits over the period 2010-2011. The sampling visits occurred over the period July-October 2010, April-October 2011 for water quality and July-October 2010 for the trophic state.
The water quality is evaluated based on parameters, such as Dissolved Oxygen (DO), Dissolved Oxygen after 5 days (DO5) and Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD). The content of chlorophyll a is determined based on standardized spectrophotometric methods. pH and temperature are noted at each sampling site.
The sampling sites selected in the two ecosystems represent significant differences in regards to the trophic state and the water quality. Values vary depending on the sampling month, year and location.
Chlorophyll a content in Vain lagoon varies from 3 μg/dm3 to 72 μg/dm3, in Kune lagoon from 1.5 to 81.6 μg/dm3. In Viluni lagoon chlorophyll a values range from 1.2 to 7.5 μg/dm3.
Dissolved oxygen values range from 3.577 mg/l to 8.842 mg/l in Vain, from 5.5 mg/l to 15.2 mg/l, depending on the sampling stations location and the monitoring period.
