ABSTRACT

Serpentine terrains are quite present in the territory of the Republic of Kosovo. Larger
spaces are found in the valley of the Ibar River, Golesh, Brezovicë, Pashallarë, near
Gjakova, Koznik, Koznicë etc. Otherwise the serpentine rocks are widespread
throughout the world, and research in terms of geological, petrographical, chemical,
composition of the flora and vegetation were given especial attention. However, in
Kosovo serpentine rocks are interesting and distinctive in many aspects including flora
and vegetation. In the context of Kosovo serpentines, ecosystems differentiate on forest
and shrubs ecosystems and herbaceous ecosystems. Forest and shrub vegetation of the
Kosovo serpentines is rich and interesting. So far some ecosystems are known: Erico-
Pinetum nigrae Kras. on Kopaonik, Junipero-Pinetum heldreichii Blec. et Tat. on
Pashallarë, Fagetum subalpinum Grebes on Kopaonik, Pinetum mugo serpentinicum
Rexhepi on Pashallarë, Daphno-Genistetum radiatae Ran. et Rexhepi on Kopaonik,
Polygalo-Forsythietum europaeae Kras. et Blec. on Koznik, Golesh and Astero-
Juniperetum oxycedrii në Pllanik and Koznik.
