SEDIMENTOLOGICAL AND GEOCHEMICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF HOLOCENE LAGOONAL DEPOSITS, AMVRAKIKOS GULF, WESTERN GREECE

ABSTRACT

This study presents sedimentological, geochemical and mineralogical data from a 30 m
core depth of Late Holocene lagoonal depositional environment, of a coastal area of the
Amvrakikos Gulf, western Greece. Standard sedimentological analysis was carried out
on 64 samples including grain-size, calculation of moment measures, Total Organic
Carbon and whole – core Magnetic Susceptibiliy (MS), while geochemical and
mineralogical analysis was carried out in 26 samples. Sediment types, structure, colour,
as well as contact depths and bed characteristics, were recorded. On the basis of the
geochemical evaluation of the sediments analyzed there is an enrichment of Fe2O3,
MnO, MgO, CaO, P2O3, Cr, Co, Ni and a depletion of Ba and Sr relative to shales. SiO2,
K2O and Na2O showing variations with depth. The sedimentological and geochemical
interpretation of the lagoonal deposits indicates the presence of three major zones. The
upper zone extended from the top 5 m to the 11 m, the middle from 11-21 m and the
lower from 21-30 m. In addition, the mineralogical analysis indicates the presence of
quartz, calcite, dolomite, albite, lepidocrocite, goethite, illite, chlorite, mixed-layer
chlorite-smectite and traces of vermiculite and pyrite.
