ABSTRACT

The marine ecosystem is a rich source of active ingredients useful to human health. The
identification, implementation in pharmaceutical forms and their usage in treating
diseases involves cooperation between scientists within varied interdisciplinary areas.
Of an utmost importance to everyone is to know the marine ecosystem in order to select
the marine resources of low toxicity. The identification, extraction and implementation
in pharmaceutical forms involve the participation of scientists from varied fields such
as: marine environment, biology, chemistry, biochemistry and pharmacy. As a result,
the contribution of medical staff is essential in treatment of varied diseases with the
drugs obtained out of marine resources.
In this context, the aim of this paper is to provide an overview on chitin and chitosan
properties (deacetylation degree - DD and low molecular weight - Mw) in tight
connection with their promising medical and pharmaceutical applications.

Keywords: Chitin, chitosan, deacetylation degree, drug delivery
