DETERMINATION OF THE DEGREE OF LIBERATION AND OPTIMUM GRIND TIME OF KAYABAŞI- TRABZON (TURKEY) CU-ZN MASSIVE ORE

ABSTRACT

Detailed geological and drilling investigations have shown Kayabaşı deposit,
located in Trabzon-Turkey, has a resource of 590 000 tons ore containing 2.2% Cu and
1029 kg Au. The ore body shows the characteristics of both massive- and stockworktype
sulfide mineralization.
In this study, mineralogical analysis and flotation tests were performed to
determine the degree of liberation of sulfides and the optimum grind time for the
massive ore samples. Covellite and chalcocite were identified as the main copper
minerals. Barite, calcite and silica were identified as the gang mineral. Grinding the ore
to –38μm was found to liberate 77.94% of the copper bearing mineral grains. Flotation
tests indicated that the grade of Cu concentrate increased with increasing the grind time.
However, Cu recovery decreased with increasing the grind time from 10 to 30 minute
and a reverse trend i.e. increase in Cu recovery was observed with a further increase in
the grind time from 30 to 50 min.
