PROBLEMS OF RADIATION PROTECTION DURING THE EXECUTION OF PHARE PROJECT FOR REHABILITATION OF URANIUM INDUSTRY REGIONS

The PHARE Project “Supervision for closing of the Uranium Mines at Eleshnitza and
Dospat” foreseen recultivation of tailing pond at hydrometallurgical plant
“Zvezda”Eleshnitza, construction of Waste water treatment plant for drainage waters, and
construction of depo for domestic wastes in quarry to mine “Dospat” – Barutin.
The radiation protection during the rehabilitation engineering works is carry out in
accordance with Inception Report present by Supervisor; the actual standard document; the
permission of Agency for Nuclear Regulation for working with open radioactive matters,
which content natural radionuclides; the geographical and demographical characteristics of
the regions.
In presented report are discussed the data from measurements at place, laboratory analyzes
of samples from working areas and estimation of the foreseen and real levels of expose of
radiation to personnel during the April 2002 – December 2003. It is shown the approach for
valuation of radiation situation, the controlling parameters, the places of samples taking and
the number of measurements, as well as the data from the direct and indirect defining of
equivalent doses of some category personnel of the Contractor.
The results from radiation control in working environment are generalized in table form,
showed at maps (according to data by GPS system for point connection), and the results are
illustrated with documental pictures/photos, which investigated the real situation of the
working areas during the different stages of project realization.
We draw a conclusion that the project realization decides one very important ecological
problem as in the same time we do not expect increased professional risk for the
personnel/staff on the site.
