TOE EROSION INDUCED LANDSLIDES FROM ŞEBINKARAHISAR (GIRESUN-TURKEY): PART I

ABSTRACT
This case study presented herein describes and analyses the results of the
detailed surveys of landslides caused by toe erosion in Avutmus district of
Sebinkarahisar (Giresun-Turkey), based on field and laboratory measurements,
monitoring and remote sensing data of the study area. Sebinkarahisar has been
recognized as a landslide-prone area. Landslides in this area caused several
hazards in the houses and farming areas. In view of landslide re-occurrence
potential in this area and its close environ, understanding of the failure
mechanism is highly crucial. Field investigations, analysis of geological data,
and laboratory tests suggest that two important factors have acted together on
the slopes to cause sliding. The surficial water and groundwater circulation also
played an important role in the initiating the movements. However, instability
condition of the slopes is especially connected to the toe erosion created by
river.
Keywords: Toe erosion, Sebinkarahisar (Giresun-Turkey), landslide.
