ABSTRACT

This paper is about how to build a cheap modern temperature control system on an existing manufacturing system. The authors designed and implemented the control system to a tunnel type furnace for burning bricks used in constructions at SICERAM S.A. Company, Sighisoara, Romania. The bricks manufacturing phases are described in order to help the reader to understand the process complexity and the graph of the entire loading/unloading process is shown together with the tunnel furnace schematics. Then, the graphical interface of the process operator console is shown where the reader can identify the main components. The authors took into consideration and studied the original furnace which contained 37 temperature control systems with thermocouples and manually operated classic controllers. Based on this study, a PLC based temperature control system has been designed. After setting up the system structure, the next step was to analyzing the solution found by presenting its advantages and disadvantages and verifying it; also, the necessary investment was presented. A Siemens S7 400 has been chosen for the implementation and the paper contains some of the ladder logic programs used by the authors for the considered application.

Keywords: temperature control system, PID controller, thermocouple, tunnel furnace, ladder diagram, ceramic bricks manufacturing.
