ABSTRACT
The use of weak local soil as well as the recycling of existing worn-out structures such as old road pavements using micro particle road binders are a beneficial ecological solutions. Parameters of the soil stabilized with binders significantly affect the load bearing capacity and durability of the built structures. Mechanical parameters of the soil are therefore needed in the analysis and design of soil structures. Determination of the exact value of these parameters in indirect tensile test is related to the need to precisely determine the strains present in the specimen of the material under load.
In the presented study of the mechanical properties of the soil stabilized with a micro particle road binder, a modern non-contact method for measuring the deformations of the specimen surface under test was used. The digital image correlation (DIC) method was implemented. The measurement results allowed for the determination of the soil mechanical parameters: the elasticity modulus, Poisson’s ratio and tensile strength. One of the conclusions flowing from the tests is the finding that the DIC method allows for the determination of displacements and strains of soil specimens in any direction and at any point, which significantly facilitates streamlining and speeding up the testing procedures in comparison with traditional methods using strain gauge techniques.
