ABSTRACT

The article compares power gains from horizontal polycrystalline and vertical monocrystalline photovoltaic installations operating under identical, real-world conditions in the city of Olsztyn. The study was conducted between 1 October 2014 and 31 August 2017, excluding a monthly downtime period between 24 January 2016 and 2 March 2016 which occurred due to unexpected technical difficulties. The paper analyzes the long-term efficiency of monocrystalline and polycrystalline photovoltaic installations under the real-world conditions of north-eastern Poland. The weather conditions in the investigated area are not highly favorable for the development of solar technology. The average annual insolation is 990 kWh/m2, of which around 77% is received in summer. The average number of sunshine hours per year is 1600, which accounts for only around 18.2% of the year. Despite the above, the installed capacity of photovoltaic micro-generation systems has tripled in 2016. The experimental data were compared with the results of simulations performed in the PV Sol program. Real-world data were consistent with simulation results. In the analyzed period of 34 months, the total power output of the polycrystalline PV installation on parking canopies was 76.836 MWh, and the total power output of the monocrystalline PV installation on a building wall was 30.961 MWh
