ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study was to identify the factors of influence in alluvial deposits due to the anchoring of barges in the vicinity of river ports. The problem of analysis was identified at the anchorage of the barges near the Galati Mineral Harbor on the Danube River.
The area of the navigable channel located downstream of the mineral port is affected by alluvial deposits. Major problems occur in the summer months, when Danube waters are very low.
Analysis of these issues was done with the SolidWorks Flow module, which is based on Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). The geometry of the study area has been modeled in three dimensions. The conditions of several situations of the Danube quotas have been defined, with the flow rates specific to the analyzed period.
The obtained results, expressed graphically and numerically, allowed to identify the influence of barge anchoring on alluvial deposits. Comments made on the basis of the results led to the formulation of important conclusions. Anchoring positions of barges are important factors in sediment deposition. The degree of loading of barges influences currents and downstream flow rates. Danube waters in the area of the port are factors that influence the results. Barrier anchoring positions have been identified that can be used to guide currents at quasi-speeding speeds to reduce sediment deposits.
This can be useful for the company that provides navigation conditions, the Lower Danube River Administration.
