ON THE DYNAMICS OF MERCURY IN THE MOUTH AREA WATERS OF THE NORTHERN DVINA RIVER FOR A 10-YEAR OBSERVATION PERIOD

ABSTRACT

The article presents the materials of long-term research conducted from 2004, in the mouth area of the Northern Dvina River. The program of researches included determination of concentrations of mercury in the water, covering about 150 km of the river length. We also analyzed such parameters of water as pH, Eh, oxygen content, salinity. A long observation period allowed us to trace the peculiarities of the changes of mercury content in water, which was the aim of the present work. Previously the authors determined that a relatively high content of mercury in waters and bottom sediments of the area are of anthropogenic origin. It is known that in recent years the use of mercury in all sectors of the economy reduced, from official sources, it is evident that the main supplier of mercury to the river ecosystem of the Northern Dvina mouth area changed the technology of production, and it’s free from mercury. In this aspect, this study is unique for this region, because it allows to see the dynamics of mercury over a 10-year period, to identify the main trends, also the complexity of the work gives the opportunity to analyze the causes of fluctuations of mercury concentrations in water and to draw some conclusions about the processes of purification of the ecosystem.
