HYGROTHERMAL PERFORMANCE OF WALL SEGMENT UNDER CONDITIONS ALLOWING ICE FORMING PROCESSES

Abstract:
This paper deals with validation of an enhanced mathematical model for description of coupled heat and moisture transport which is able to model ice forming processes. This phenomenon is usually neglected because of computational difficulties even if it has a significant influence on heat and moisture transport. For the sake of model validation, data gathered by means of semi-scale experiment was used, analyzing a hygrothermal performance of a real building assembly – an external wall. The wall was exposed to dynamic climatic conditions of Olomouc in form of test reference year between January and March, when the temperature drops often below zero. Assuming the water/ice phase change, the hygrothermal performance was determined experimentally as well as computationally and the data was compared. The low root mean square error (1.141 °C and 5.699 %RH) showed that the mathematical model provides precise results and can be applied for building energy calculations in cold region climates.
