CORROSION OF ARCHITECTURE AND INFRASTRUCTURE ELEMENTS IN ROMANIAN BLACK SEA LITTORAL AREA

Abstract:
The marine environment is considered to be a highly aggressive environment for metallic materials used in the construction of the various elements of the structures. The aggressiveness of the marine environment is given by a number of chemical, physical and mechanical factors. They make maintenance of structures to be very difficult and very high costs are allocated. The phenomena of degradation by corrosion at level onshore and offshore are favored and accelerated by a number of factors related to long periods of humidity and high concentrations of chlorides, sulfur oxides, carbon dioxide. Another factor to be taken into account in maritime areas are aggressive ultraviolet radiation (UV), they have a strong effect on some types of degrading corrosion protection. The degradation effect of building elements, steel structures placed in the marine environment is a resulting action of sea water and marine atmospheric environment, most often with amplification effects. In the case of metal components as an integral part of the architectural design the various building located on the Romanian coast or of the general and tourism infrastructure, corrosion raise issues of economic nature and operation safety. The economic problems are not related only to the costs of maintenance for lifetime extensions in the exploitation service, but the negative impact of corrosion on the visual comfort, aesthetic and also to human quality of life in general. For marine corrosion prevention of metallic materials there are used a number of protection methods, especially organic and inorganic coatings. In the last period of time, polymer protective coatings with good results in corrosion protection have been widely used. The aim of this research work is the corrosion behavior evaluation of the low alloy steel E 32 having three type of surface treatments, namely: (i) uncoated steel, (ii) coated steel with polyamide primer and (iii) coated steel with polyamide primer and aliphatic polyurethane epoxy coating. All samples were subject to corrosion evaluation in seawater collected from the Black Sea, Mangalia and Navodari areas. For corrosion investigations electrochemical methods were applied such as: open circuit potential (OCP), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), polarization resistance (Rp), and potentiodynamic polarization (PD).
