CHARACTERIZATION OF A LIGHTWEIGHT CONCRETE WITH CORN COB AGGREGATES

Abstract:
Nowadays, an important objective for researchers is to find an alternative to build cheaper and greener, sustainable and also durable. To discover a material with better thermal and acoustic performances than conventional concrete by using natural and renewable components in its composition became also an obvious trend. The agriculture products, mainly those considered as waste in this field, fulfill all the above mentioned requirements, being also widely available and with higher thermal and acoustic properties than traditional aggregates from concrete composition. Corn cob is an agricultural waste important as a building material due to its macro- and microstructural similarities to expanded polystyrene, cork or expanded clay; these particularities recommends its using as a raw material for thermal insulating products or light partition walls. The aim of this research was to analyze the possibility of granulated corn cob using as a sustainable alternative in lightweight concrete obtaining. Corn cob aggregates used in this research were added in the concrete mix in three variants: granules without any treatment, granules treated for about 100% reduction of their water absorption capacity, and granules treated for about 200% reduction of their water absorption capacity. Natural aggregates replaced 50% by volume the traditional aggregates (sand and stone aggregates). The density, compressive strength, flexural and splitting tensile strength of the lightweight concrete obtained were experimentally analyzed comparatively with a conventional concrete without any natural aggregate, with very good compressive strength. The results showed very high differences between reference concrete and the concrete with untreated corn cob, but the mechanical properties improved significantly as the water absorption treatment of the corn cob was applied. As a conclusion, by replacing natural aggregates with granulated corn cob it was obtained a lightweight concrete for non-structural applications.
