INCORPORATION OF SILICA FUME INTO CEMENT BASED COMPOSITES CURED UNDER SPECIFIC HYDROTHERMAL CONDITIONS

Abstract:
Present paper is focused on the development of high performance concrete (HPC) based on white Portland cement, which could be used for the production façade panels. Various doses of silica fume, up to 40%, were incorporated into the studied mixtures, however investigated mixtures were designed to constant consistency. The half of samples was cured under specific hydrothermal conditions to obtain higher degree of hydration. Properties of studied HPC mixtures were evaluated predominantly in terms of mechanical properties – compressive and flexural strength were determined. Experimental program confirmed high practical potential of silica fume for the production of architectural concrete element. Incorporation of silica fume caused the significant increase of mechanical properties, compressive strength of all studied mixtures exceed 80 MPa. Hydrothermal curing significantly contributed to the mechanical properties of mixtures with silica fume addition, predominantly in case of flexural strength values, which were increased approximately by 20% in comparison to samples cured under standard laboratory conditions. Control mixtures without silica fume reached after hydrothermal curing nearly similar properties. Performed experimental program confirmed good potential of advanced technologies to reduce negative impact of concrete production on the environment.
